In 2018, Eurofiber started building a large-scale, densely deployed fiber-optic network between all locations of the municipality of Rotterdam. All existing fiber-optic networks used by the municipality of Rotterdam are being optimized and connected to the Eurofiber network, creating a single, high-quality fiber-optic network for the municipality.
Benefits of a single, high-quality fiber-optic network for the City of Rotterdam
- Facilitating the municipality’s smart city ambitions.
- Achieving considerable cost reductions
- Existing municipal fiber-optic networks, including Glazen-Maas, will be reused wherever possible, which will minimize investments in new connections.
Smart City Rotterdam one step closer
Rotterdam is preparing the city for the future, and the development of smart city applications plays an important role in this context. At its core, smart city solutions are about applying smart technologies to urban challenges. Innovations such as sensor technology, resilience, mobility solutions, 5G and big data will be deployed to make the city and the people living in it smarter, more sustainable and more efficient. To that end, communication, data, information, knowledge and sharing are essential – and that requires a high-quality digital infrastructure.
An open network that provides the desired level of freedom
The municipality greatly values optimal availability, maximum bandwidth and a safe and secure network. And Eurofiber’s infrastructure is open. This means the municipality has complete freedom to add or change services and applications. For Rotterdam, this is key. After all, ICT services for residents, visitors and entrepreneurs in the city are changing constantly. In addition, the new network offers sufficient opportunities for the internal ambitions of the clusters and departments.
Social Return on Investment (SROI)
As a supplement to this project, Eurofiber and the municipality of Rotterdam are jointly investing in the development of a number of social initiatives. These initiatives will be defined during the course of the collaboration.
